Ride On – Cycling For All is the bicycle recycling charity at 61 Haven Road where you can learn to service your own bike.
“We teach all sorts of people how to refurbish their bikes; secondary school children, Duke of Edinburgh award participants, people with some time on their hands and regular riders who want to keep their bicycles working in tip-top condition,” says founder Martyn Laxton.
“People leave us with a new skill or two, and feel inspired to get out for a ride on Exeter's wonderful cycle routes knowing they can cope with any mechanical hitches.”
From their beginnings repairing children's bikes in a borrowed garage it's been a five year journey to the current location in Haven Road on Exeter quay where Ride On have a showroom filled with various machines from children's balance bikes to vintage racing bikes. There are enough tools and bike stands to host groups doing bike repair training alongside opening the doors to customers who stroll in for a chat about bikes.
“Many of our customers like coming back here for a chat or help with their bike and end up joining our volunteers!” says Adam Golding our workshop manager, “We're all friendly and enthusiastic about riding our bikes and helping others get the same buzz.”
“Thanks for a brilliant session, I found it really helpful. Changed my brake pads yesterday, easy as pie!” – said Bridget, after finishing a Maintenance Course class.
