Sands Consultants, alongside Venture Property and Greenslade Taylor Hunt, have won Best Change of Use of an Existing Building or Conversion with their project Hornshay Farm, Wellington. Sands Consultants worked with their clients to convert the existing arrangement of agricultural barns and outbuildings into six houses.
The significant structural challenges faced with this building were the condition of the existing walls and roof. Significant repair was required to the walls which were a mixture of stone, brick and cob, some walls needed to be rebuilt entirely and tied back into the existing structure. Many of the existing timber lintels and brick arches needed repairs and large cracks had formed on some of the walls which required stitching.
The client was heavily involved throughout the drawing process. We also had to consider the sequence in which the project was carried out to ensure temporary stability at all times as well as long term stability.
The project was completed in August 2015.
