Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) launched its Chevithorne Appeal in March 2015 with the vision of funding a family suite for critically and terminally ill patients at the RD&E. Thanks to the support of charitable trusts, companies and individuals around Exeter, we only have £20,000 of the £420,000 left to raise. Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far!
The Suite will support families like Joanne’s:
Joanne’s son Richard, was admitted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in April last year, where he was diagnosed with HLH (Haemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis). The family only had six weeks to come to terms with the diagnosis.
Living in Plymouth, Joanne faced a 40 minute drive to visit her son, Richard’s sister was even further away. With the rapid advance of the illness it soon became clear that Richard needed his mum and his family close by at all times; something that would have been impossible without the ELF accommodation service.
“As a mum, or dad, if you’re leaving your very sick son – it doesn’t matter if he’s six, 12 or 22 – some nights to walk out of there was really hard. With that new room you could have snatched a couple of hours sleep and he would have known we were there.”
