A year ago, John Brett, Nexus Operations Director, set a target of bolstering the personal accreditations held by the engineers and consultants by 50. In the end, the final gain was 60 professional certifications, including accreditations from Microsoft, Dell, VMware, Veeam, Datto, Webroot, ITIL, Prince and AudioCodes.
John comments: “The drive wasn’t because of skills gaps in the team, so much as to remove silos of specialisation. Fast forward to now, and we have seen an increase in the productivity of the team, with members better able to support each other.
“Along the way, we’ve seen other benefits, with client requests and projects being delivered more quickly, and a higher rate of first-contact fixes on support issues. Our staff also value the investment in keeping them at the top of their game. Our strong roster of vendor accreditations means we can compete in the national arena, with our verified capability.
“The professional training bar has been raised further for each tier of 1st-, 2nd– and 3rd-line engineers. There’s still no substitute for experience, so we won’t promote someone to our top tier without at least 5 years’ experience of delivering solutions, from pre-sales right the way through to project delivery and business-as-usual support.
“We’ve been experimenting with different modes of study, and a pleasant surprise hase been the ‘access from anywhere’ model. A delegate can sit in a room at work, but have a virtual place on a course taking place in a city elsewhere. Technology is used to allow remote participation, with questions and interaction as usual. The maximum number of delegates on the course is the same, so everyone gets attention from the trainer. With no travel time and zero expenses, it works out well all around.”
