Devon commercial radio station Radio Exe has seen its online audience surge since lockdown. Listening to the Exeter-based broadcaster on apps and smart devices has risen by more than 35 per cent over four weeks.

The news coincides with independent research called Eurobarometer that shows radio is once again the most trusted medium in the UK.  The survey, conducted to assess the public’s perception about a range of issues in Europe, found that 57 per cent of respondents trust radio, compared with 49 per cent for television and 46 per cent for press. Social media and websites are trusted much less than traditional media with social networks the least trusted of all in 28 out of 33 countries.

Radio Exe’s managing director Paul Nero, who is a director of Exeter Chamber of Commerce, says the combination high levels of trust combined with a mix of news and entertainment is a strong reason for audiences to seek out local radio at a time of crisis.
