Rapid Charging Exeter is a new initiative bringing state-of-the-art, rapid electric vehicle chargers to neighbourhoods across Exeter.
Exeter is already streets ahead of the rest of the UK when it comes to electric vehicle ownership. With the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars, electric vehicle sales are set to increase exponentially. But for many people, charging at or near home is impossible – this puts up a barrier to switching to electric.
Rapid Charging Exeter is setting out to change this and will be installing charging hubs across the city, beginning with 10 sites in residential roads. Hubs will comprise of two chargers and two battery units, enabling up to 4 electric cars to charge at the same time. Each charger can pump in around 75 miles of range (25kWh) in just 30 minutes. The hubs are powered by 100% solar energy generated in Devon.
As electric cars become the norm on our streets, having a local rapid charge point will become an important neighbourhood amenity. The network will help Exeter become a much greener city, with reduced emissions and cleaner air for all.
Thanks to a partnership with Co Cars, Exeter’s sustainable car club (www.co-cars.co.uk), nine of the initial hubs are coming complete with a brand-new electric vehicle for community hire-by-the-hour use.
