Triodos Bank provides landmark debt package for Oxygen Conservation

As we only lend to organisations delivering positive social, environmental or cultural impact, we can offer introducers a mission-aligned partner for customers who share our values. We provide loans from £1m – £20m for customers delivering this positive impact, with repayment terms of up to 25 years.

Oxygen Conservation

Triodos Bank UK has provided Oxygen Conservation with a £20.55m loan to help scale its conservation activity in what is believed to have been the largest conservation-focused commercial debt package in the UK at the time.

The loan helped to fund the acquisition of 23,000 acres of land in Scotland – 11,407 acres of Langholm Moor, known as Blackburn and Hartsgarth, and an 11,626-acre estate at Invergeldie in Perthshire.

Oxygen Conservation works to protect and improve natural assets, generating a positive economic return as a result of its work, not as its purpose. By taking a holistic approach, Oxygen ensures its efforts not only benefit the environment, but also contribute to local communities’ social and economic wellbeing.

The loan is structured with a repayment period of 25 years and is interest only for the first five. Triodos offered a flexible arrangement that would trigger repayments based on the sale of carbon credits, including Pending Issuance Units (PIUs) and verified Woodland and Peatland Carbon Units.

Triodos is changing what it means to be a bank. That’s why, when we were looking for someone to partner with to put together a significant conservation-based debt package, there was only one answer. It’s only by creating these types of funding packages and frameworks with respected financial institutions that people can have the confidence to allow private finance to flow into natural capital at scale – thereby funding the protection of the natural world.
Rich Stockdale, Managing Director at Oxygen Conservation

We have worked for over five years to find models that enable investment in nature restoration. Oxygen Conservation is a pioneer in this approach; protecting and restoring nature with a commitment to deliver positive environmental and social impact, while generating a sustainable financial return, very much aligning with our own values as a bank. We’re extremely proud to be working together on this ground-breaking finance structure and hope to see similar projects around the UK.
