A global company which has developed the latest technology to locate buried pipes and cables has chosen Exeter Science Park to research and develop its products.

Vivax-Metrotech develops and manufactures products for buried utility locating instruments and video inspection equipment using the latest advanced cutting-edge technology.

The organisation, which has its headquarters in Santa Clara, California, in the heart of the Silicon Valley, will now conduct a significant part of the research and development from its new premises at Exeter Science Park where a team of 10 engineers and scientists will be based. The company will also be relocating its electromagnetic screening chamber to a laboratory at the park.

Mark Royle, engineering director at Vivax-Metrotech, said the Science Park would be the ideal location for his team.

“In Exeter our focus is purely on research and development. We wanted to move to a science-focused location, with high quality facilities where we would be amongst likeminded organisations.”

Jason Buck, senior business development manager at Exeter Science Park, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Mark and his team. With their focus on R&D they will be a very welcome addition to the community at the park.

“We believe there will be some excellent collaborative opportunities with our existing businesses and the universities. Their electromagnetic chamber in particular, could be beneficial for others here at the park.”

Established more than 40 years ago the German-owned Metrotech Corporation has been a leading provider of high-quality utility locating instruments. Vivax was established in 2005 by a team experienced in the design, manufacture and sale of utility locators and video inspection products. Over the course of 2009 – Metrotech and Vivax merged to form a single company, Vivax-Metrotech Corp. Its headquarters is based in Santa Clara California and its manufacturing facilities are in Shanghai.

Exeter Science Park, which has grown a community of technology and science-based businesses, provides an ideal setting for Vivax-Metrotech. The park currently is home to more than 45 businesses and organisations, employing around 700 people at its location just off the M5 outside Exeter.
