South West HR professionals come together to discuss EDI in the region

Cathedral Appointments, a South-West based recruitment consultancy, has launched Talking HR, an events network for HR and internal recruitment professionals where they can come together to address key concerns, navigate challenges and help businesses grow. For the first event, Cathedral Appointments welcomed guest speakers and professionals from around the region to discuss overcoming Equality, Diversity and Inclusion challenges.

Guest speakers included Kate Shoesmith, Deputy CEO of the Recruitment Employment Confederation, Shades Chaudhary, Assistant Director of Culture at the University of Exeter and James Baker, Partner and Employment Law Specialist at Michelmores LLP.

Kate provided guests with an overview of the employment market, delving into what they can expect from the next generation coming through to the market and how EDI and business values are a key concern for that demographic. Shades spoke on the importance of committing to EDI practices in business and how to enable opportunities for positive action. Last to speak was James who spoke on why EDI needs greater representation in business, setting clear measures for success and where you stand legally.

Each of the speakers provided guests with tangible steps they could take in their own organisations to review their EDI practices and policies. Cathedral Appointments also provided guests with a selection of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion books to choose from to further the opportunity for learning.

“Talking HR brought a range of HR professionals together from across the South West. The speakers were high quality and EDI is a very relevant topic. There were excellent timings on the event which made it so easy to fit into work schedules.” Helen Fenner, South West Water.

“We wanted to create an event that celebrated HR professionals and recruiters from around the region. They are often the backbone of an organisation, the unsung heroes, and we wanted a place where likeminded people could come together to connect, share ideas and foster brighter opportunities for us in the South West. Our goal is that each attendee gains valuable insight and knowledge for them to take away and implement in their workplaces. We want to help make the South West an even bigger hub for innovation and future thinking.” Jo Caine, Managing Director at Cathedral Appointments.

The invite only event was hosted at Froginwell Vineyard in Exeter. Due to the success of the event and further interest, Cathedral Appointments will be hosting a second event in the latter half of the year where they will discuss another key topic facing HR professionals in the workplace.
