Last week was a very exciting time for Phil Sampson, founder of Sampson Hall, as he was asked by the UKTI to visit Mexico to talk to top Government Officials and business leaders with the aim of providing the most in depth and targeted Cyber Security to Public and Private sector end users.
Phil was one of a selected few from the UK delegates to deliver expert presentations about current challenges for Cyber Security, including; Change Management, Advanced Analytics, Financial Crime, Virtualization and private cloud security, Big Data, Security Administration, Detection of Cyber Attacks and Resilience management lessons learned and case studies.

How well are you prepared as an organisation for a cyber-attack?
Ask a CEO about cyber security and you will often be directed to the IT department. Ask the organisation if the cyber risk is covered and you will be reassuringly told that it is, normally by the head of IT. But I’m sure TalkTalk boss Dido Harding was reassured in the same way before a cyber breach lost her organisation 101,000 customers and cost £60m. It was their third attack and it was disguised through a Distributed Denial of Service but the key problem for TalkTalk that exacerbated the whole issue was their reaction to the attack.
Here are some questions you may wish to ponder:
• As a CEO do you know what ransomware is and how to defeat it?
• Do you understand the proliferation of cyber-crime and the potential it has to damage your business?
• Sophisticated spear phishing is a key issue whatever size your business, do you have the necessary procedures in place to prevent it?
• And just how ready is your business to deal with the new EU General Data Protection Regulation which will be enforced from 2018 and can lead to fines of up to 4% of global turnover if you operate within the EU?
The consequences of a cyber breach can bring a business to its knees and the problem with most Chief Executives and business owners is they do not understand either the cyber threat they face nor the cyber risk they bear from both a personnel and a technical perspective and hence the true liability their organisation carries.
